Consider the disposition of the world - "Marvel not if the world hate you." If they hate the light, they are not likely to love those who diffuse it. The principles and walk of the Christian reproach and condemn, not only the profane, but many who would pass for religious, but who deny the power of godliness, while they have the form. The mere moral and pharisaical are often the bitterest enemies of evangelical piety. The rule was once deemed without exception: "Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution." The absence of it now, is owing, not to the lack of disposition, but power. Many things restrain it; yet it is restrained only in the degree. The hand is tied; but the tongue is free - and how does it deal with the decided followers of the Lamb? And what is the carnal mind, but enmity against God? _________________ "Never be without a book in daily reading, of a direct Scriptural and devotional tendency." - Hale |

When "the principles and walk of the Christian reproach and condemn" it is historical that persecution follows. The type of persecution has changed from physical due only to the "lack of power" not the disposition of those that would persecute. In todays changing times I find this a challenging thought for the Christian that has had so little real persecution. The American church is content to believe that the absence of conflict with the world is a good thing. While those in the world are restrained from stronger persucution of Christians due to a lack of power - not desire. What would happen if the "power to persecute" were available? |
